January

Final-Fantasy-VIIArguably the greatest JRPG of all time, Final Fantasy 7 was a huge success for Squaresoft (now SquareEnix.) It was the first JRPG for a lot of gamers in the ’90s so many have fond memories of putting in hundreds of hours into the game that spanned across 3 discs on the original Sony Playstation. Final Fantasy 7 featured highly-detailed cutscene segments which were fairly ground-breaking at the time while the rest of the graphics haven’t aged so well. Final Fantasy 7 sold 2.3 million copies within it’s first 3 days in Japan and as of the date of this writing, has sold 11 million copies in total spanning across different platforms (Ps1, PSN, PC, iOS etc.)

 

February

Gravity-RushGravity Rush was released on the Sony Playstation Vita 5 years ago and gamers played as Kat who has the powers to control gravity. The traversing in this game was executed well and flying around the town or fighting enemies felt very polished. A sequel is being released this year for both the Sony Playstation 4 and the Sony Playstation Vita game systems. It remains as being one of the best games on the Sony Vita and was later re-released on the Playstation 4 as a remastered port.

Tekken-3Tekken 3 was a huge hit both on the Sony Playstation and arcade machines with over 8.5 million copies sold making it the fourth best selling Playstation 1 game. Tekken 3 featured improved graphics over the previous Tekken titles and more fluid controls and is regarded as one of the best fighting video games ever released by many gamers. It has scored both a 96% review rating on Metacritic and GameRankings which very few games have achieved.

Kirby's_Dream_Land_Kirby’s Dream Land was released on the original Nintendo Gameboy system and was the very first Kirby game. Kirby has now a long list of titles across many gaming consoles. Kirby’s Dream Land was re-released on the Nintendo 3DS console via the Virtual Console store in 2011. In total, the game has sold over 5 million copies at this time of this writing worldwide.

Wolfenstein_3DWolfenstein 3D is an iconic game and started the entire FPS genre which is now one of the most popular genres for video games in today’s market. It featured William “BJ” Blazkowicz as the protagonist who was fighting to destroy the Nazi regime. iD Software began work on the Doom series after the release of Wolfenstein which has also become a popular FPS series. Final-Fantasy-TacticsFinal Fantasy Tactics was another popular game released by Squaresoft (now SqaureEnix) in the 1990’s which featured a tactical role playing game style with 3d, isometric art. Later sequels and spinoffs were released such as Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire Of The Rift and the most recent one being Final Fantasy Tactics: War Of The Lions in 2007. Many gamers have been begging for SquareEnix to reboot this popular series but there hasn’t been any mention of if we will ever see more Final Fantasy Tactics games.

metal-gear-1987The very first Metal Gear game was released 30 years ago which was designed by gaming legend, Hideo Kojima for the MSX2. It was then also released on the original Nintendo Entertainment System (NES.) The Metal Gear series now consists of 11 titles and has been a huge success across the world. In Metal Gear, gamers play as Solid Snake, who is a rookie of the FOXHOUND special operations unit during the Cold War period.

goldeneye-007GoldenEye 007 on the Nintendo 64 was one of the best multiplayer games of the 1990’s and is still a favourite among many gamers. It was a rare situation where a video game based on a movie was actually good! Many joysticks of Nintendo 64 controllers saw their demise after putting in long hours of multiplayer sessions with friends. This game also paved the way for Perfect Dark, which was another popular FPS game for the Nintendo 64.

Fallout-3Fallout 3 was a smash hit for Bethesda, making it one of the greatest Western RPG’s of all time. Player’s fought for survival in a post-apocalyptic world in the year 2277 after a nuclear war and featured such landmarks as Washington DC. The game featured hundreds of hours of play-ability as well as 5 DLC’s to provide even more locations to explore and unique weapons to collect. Fallout 3 wasn’t without it’s flaws, especially on the Playstation 3 where the frame-rate or loading times could get quite bad as well as random crashes.

Half Life 2: Episode 2 was the last part of the Half-Life series, with fans constantly begging for Half Life 3. Half Life 2 has received critical acclaim and is known as one of the best FPS games of all time. The game featured a more open gameplay style over the more linear style that was featured in Episode 1 and players continued to follow the story of protagonist, Gordon Freeman.

Crysis-1

Crytek were already known for making amazing looking games such as FarCry, but when Crysis released that really set a new benchmark. It became a running joke that you had to have a top-of-the-range computer that was powerful enough to be able to run the game, something that still gets mentioned to this day. Crysis ran on CryEngine 2, which was an updated version of the original engine that Crytek had developed for FarCry. CryEngine 2 featured Direct x10 support, making it one of the first games to do so.

Gran TurismoThe first Gran Turismo game was released 20 years ago and became one of the best racing games available on the original Sony Playstation. It included a large roster of cars , 140 to be exact and 11 tracks as well as the reversed variation too. The game featured very realistic graphics for it’s time and a more simulator experience compared to a lot of the other arcade racing games available. It took 5 years for Polyphony Digital to complete the development of the game, something in which they still continue to this day when releasing new titles in the series.
