If you are lucky enough to get your hands on one, the Nintendo Classic Mini SNES has hit the stores today. We have ours as we managed to secure a pre-order immediately once they became available while many others are deciding to flip theirs on eBay for obscene amounts of money.
The Nintendo Classic Mini SNES is as the name suggests, a miniature version of the Super Nintendo console that most of us grew up playing with as kids. This time, a whopping 21 games are pre-loaded onto the console also having HDMI support so the games look better on modern TV units. There is 3 different display format modes to choose from, Pixel Perfect, 4:3 aspect ratio and the CRT Filter if you want that retro aesthetic.
The console doesn’t include an AC adapter which is required to power the unit which is a strange omission but thankfully they can be picked up cheap or if you already have a Nintendo DS charger on hand, these will be compatible with this as the included USB cable with the console can be plugged into the charger.
One thing you will notice quickly is that the controller is exactly like the original SNES controllers, so there is no home button present that you’d be familiar with using on Playstation or XBOX controllers. So if you are in a game and want to switch to another, you have to press the reset button on the console itself to jump back into the game selection screen. Another way they really stay true to the originals is the textured-plastic feel to them.

Don’t like the wired controllers that are included? 8BITdo have a solution for you with their wireless controllers that keep to the classic Nintendo style. They can be pre-ordered here on Amazon and are set to release December 10. They also have a great range of other controllers available on their website. I can definitely see myself buying a set of wireless controllers as the included wired controllers that are bundled with the Nintendo Classic Mini SNES are far too short for me to be able to play on my couch so I end up sitting on the hard floor right in front of the TV.
- Very good amount of games included and high quality ones at that
- The console itself looks great
- The added rewind function is good
- 2 controllers being included was a great decision by Nintendo
- AC Adapter not being included in the bundle
- Cords for the controllers are too short
